The Best Burgers in America, Ranked: Au Cheval's Case for the Crown

Our definitive ranking of the five best burgers in America — from Judice Inn's Zapp's-chip-topped legend in Lafayette to Au Cheval's three-hour-wait cheeseburger in Chicago. Argue accordingly.

This is the ranking that starts fights. After years of eating, arguing, and cross-referencing thousands of reviews, here is The Pass’s definitive list of the five best burgers in America — ranked, with no hedging.

5. Red Hook Tavern — Brooklyn, NY

The Hometown Bar & Grill burger at Red Hook Tavern is the connoisseur’s pick — dry-aged, cooked with obsessive precision, served in a room that feels like the platonic ideal of a Brooklyn tavern. It’s the burger that chefs name when you ask them. If the list were ranked by technique alone, it would be higher. It isn’t, and that’s the point of the list.

4. Fred’s Meat & Bread — Atlanta, GA

Fred’s built its name on a simple proposition executed perfectly: great meat, great bread, no nonsense. The burger is a study in proportion — the kind of sandwich where every element earns its place. Atlanta’s burger scene doesn’t get the national attention it deserves; Fred’s is the reason it should.

3. The Win~Dow — Santa Monica, CA

The smashburger perfected. The Win~Dow (at American Beauty) takes the smash technique — maximum crust, lacy edges, molten cheese — and serves it with California confidence. It’s the newest-school entry on this list and the proof that the form still has room to evolve.

2. Au Cheval — Chicago, IL

The cheeseburger à cheval. Google reviewers — 7,778 of them, at a 4.6 average — keep saying the same things, and they’re all true. The “single” is really a double patty. The house order is the fried egg and the thick-cut peppered bacon, which reviewers describe as melting into each bite. Dijonnaise, pickles, grilled onions, toasted bun. “Best burger I’ve ever had” appears with suspicious frequency.

The supporting cast earns its own following: roasted bone marrow with beef-cheek marmalade, fries with garlic aioli, hash browns with duck-heart gravy. And the wait is part of the story — limited reservations, two-to-three-hour waits at peak, locals going very early or sitting at the bar. It’s a pilgrimage, and pilgrimages are supposed to require effort.

1. Judice Inn — Lafayette, LA

Serving since 1947, and the pick is not close. The Judice Inn burger is a thin-patty, griddled classic — but the legend is in the ritual. The Zapp’s chips come on the side (no fries, ever), and the local move is piling the chips onto the burger yourself: the crunch, the salt, the vinegar bite of the chips against the beef. The milkshakes are to die for. This is a restaurant that has been doing one thing, perfectly, for nearly eighty years.

History matters. Technique matters. But what puts Judice Inn at the top is something rarer: a burger that could only exist in exactly one place, made exactly one way, by people who have never seen a reason to change it.

What did we get wrong?

That’s the question we ask after every ranking, and we mean it. The burger canon is personal — your hometown spot, your late-night order, the one your grandfather took you to. Tell us in the comments on Instagram: what did we miss, and what did we get wrong?
