Culloden Estate Named AA Hotel of the Year

A 150-year-old palace on Belfast Lough just took Northern Ireland’s top hotel honor. Culloden Estate & Spa has been named AA Hotel of the Year for Northern Ireland at the 2026 AA Hospitality Awards, presented Monday, September 21, at JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London before more than 1,000 hospitality professionals, with presenter and singer Fleur East hosting the ceremony.

The timing is no accident. The win lands in the estate’s 150th anniversary year — and directly on the heels of a £620,000 investment programme the hotel just completed across its bedrooms, signature suite, and spa.

Where the money went

The investment split tells you what the hotel thinks matters. £500,000 went into the Garden Rooms and Deluxe King bedrooms: deep green and terracotta interiors, marble-effect bathrooms, brushed brass fixtures, and walk-in rainfall showers — a full reworking of the rooms most guests actually sleep in.

The remaining £120,000 was divided between the Ailsa Suite (£40,000) and The Spa at Culloden (£80,000). The Ailsa Suite — the estate’s signature, used for private dining, meetings, and special occasions — got William Morris wallpaper, a bespoke marble boardroom table, and interiors tuned to its views over Belfast Lough. The spa’s share went into new marble flooring at reception, refreshed furnishings and seating, and upgraded gym equipment including new treadmills.

It’s a classic anniversary-year playbook: invest visibly, then let the awards notice. This time, they did.

The palace

The building has earned its gravitas. Completed in 1876 in Scottish Baronial style, it was designed by Belfast firm Young and Mackenzie as the official residence of the Bishops of Down, Connor and Dromore. Sir William Hastings bought the estate in 1967 and developed it as a luxury hotel; in 1996 it became Northern Ireland’s first five-star hotel. Today it’s the flagship of the six-property Hastings Hotels collection.

The numbers: 98 individually designed rooms and suites, set across 12 acres of landscaped gardens in the Holywood Hills, about 15 minutes from Belfast, with panoramic views over Belfast Lough. The dining is led by Vespers, the hotel’s flagship restaurant, which collected two AA Rosettes in 2025 for its blend of classic and contemporary cooking.

The Northern Ireland category of the AA awards was introduced in 1992, and the Culloden succeeds a varied group of regional winners — The Ebrington (2024), The Rabbit (2022), the Fitzwilliam, Bishop’s Gate, The Old Inn, and Galgorm among them.

The reaction

The spa story

The spa deserves its own paragraph. The hotel lists among its current accolades Northern Ireland’s Best Hotel Spa at the World Spa Awards and Spa of the Year at the Ulster Tatler awards — and to mark the anniversary it rolled out a “Retreat & Restore” ESPA package: a 150-minute ritual for two with thermal suite access, a glass of bubbly, and a full Irish breakfast, priced at £710.

Heritage properties across the UK and Ireland are spending heavily right now to stay competitive with the new-build luxury pipeline. The Culloden’s bet is that a 150-year-old palace, properly reinvested in, still beats a new tower — and this week, the AA agreed.
